Some plants can extract their carbon requirements from the available bicarbonate in aquarium water. Make sure you maintain at least a 50 mg/l level of carbonate hardness by using pH Stabilizer (KH Booster Art. # A-7731 and A-7732. Carbon dioxide, however, is the most easily assimilated form of carbon for all plants, and as plants are composed of 40 - 50% carbon, they will always do better with this mandatory component of photosynthesis, the basic funtion which all plants must complete. In summary, it is not always absolutely necessary. but itis almost always a major advantage to inject CO2 in a plant tank as most aquarium water contains nowhere near optimal levels, especially when proper micro- and macro-nutrient elements and proper lighting levels are provided. An advantage to using CO2 is that it lowers pH levles, which is especially beneficial in plant tanks that receive a basic (alkaline) water supply.
